Life

Mariella Simoni first studied philosophy and art history at the University of Parma . During a stay in London, financed by a grant from Giulio Carlo Argan , her artistic development was influenced by the work of the American painter Mark Rothko , which was exhibited there . In Milan she continued her studies in philosophy, psychoanalysis and psychology.

From 1975 Simoni exhibited her works regularly, initially in galleries in Brescia and Milan. She made contact with other Italian artists such as Marisa Merz , Mario Merz , Pier Paolo Calzolari and Luciano Fabro .

In 1977 Simoni went to Paris, where she attended seminars given by Jacques Lacan . In the same year she traveled to Greece for the first time and later returned several times. Nicos Baikas , George Hadjimichalis and Apostolos Georgiou belonged to the group of Greek artists close to her . In 1980 she showed some works in the gallery of Karen and Jean Bernier in Athens . The accompanying texts for the exhibition were contributed by the art historian Denys Zacharopoulos , from which a long-term collaboration with Simoni developed. Among other things, he was co-curator at documenta IX in 1992 , in which Simoni took part, and in 2011 curated her solo exhibition at the Alex Mylona Museum in Thessaloniki .

In the 1980s, Simoni exhibited several times in the Peter Pakesch Gallery in Vienna . In addition to Otto Zitko and Herbert Brandl , she was in contact with the Austrian artist Franz West . Simoni moved from Paris to Ghent at the end of the 1980s , in the meantime she lived in San Casciano dei Bagni and New York and finally back in northern Italy.
