The Marienklausensteg is a pedestrian bridge in Munich . It was built in 1997 in place of a dilapidated wooden bridge and leads at the level of the Marienklause over the Isar to the dam of the Isar works canal , on which one of the two guard stations of the "Isar Rescue" water rescue service is located just a few meters north of the footbridge. A second, older reinforced concrete bridge with a canal sluice leads from the dam over the Isar works canal to the west to the area of the Floßlände and to the campsite in the Thalkirchen district . The Hinterbrühler See lies southwest of this canal bridge .

Building history

The first footbridge at this point was from 1887. In 1928/29 a new building was built, again made of wood.

Today's footbridge was designed by the Munich architect Felix Schürmann , the structural planning was done by the engineering office Lothar Fritsche in Deggendorf . Under the authority of the City of Munich, a simple and functional bridge structure was created, which has a widening due to a slight offset in the routing, which invites you to linger and view the course of the river and the renatured Isar floodplain when crossing the river. At this offset point, a second, narrow pier branches off the bridge in the direction of the river to the north and leads to a viewpoint on the older separating wall, through which the raft slide on the eastern bank is separated from the barrage in the river bed. The swinging construction of this bridge and its transparent grating offer a special experience of the moving water underneath.

The bridge construction is kept simple in accordance with the task: Narrow concrete pillar slabs carry a four-axis superstructure made of welded double flange profiles, floating over filigree spreader arms. The construction heights of these beams were adapted to the static load. The covering of the main bridge consists of simple oak planks with open joints. The welded flat steel construction of the railing is supported by commercial steel mesh mats. All abutments and pillar discs are made of exposed concrete with horizontal, rough-sawn board formwork.

The Auer Mühlbach has been diverted from the Isar Canal on the western side of the river at a bridge lock since 1906 and passed under the Isar in a culvert , the course of which can be read on the edge of the waterfall. A few meters north of the Marienklause it reappears on the border with the zoo .
