action

Brazil after the military coup of 1964 . Since the majority of the population apparently supports the dictatorship , the party of the communist Marighella rejects any resistance for the time being. Marighella, however, ambushes a train with several like-minded people in order to steal weapons and thus fight the military dictatorship . The plan succeeds, but the second action, the robbery on a bank, turns into a fiasco. One of the hostages pulls a gun from behind and can seriously injure one of the conspirators before he himself is shot. The media portray the attackers as criminals and report neither about the leaflets distributed nor about the political motivation of the attackers. This and the brutal terror of the secret police prompts the conspirators to act just as ruthlessly. The US ambassador who supports the coup plotters is shot dead by the conspirators in front of his own house. Because this happened in front of the eyes of his 8-year-old son, a dispute arises about his own methods. As a result, the secret police arrest the scrupulous conspirator and set a trap for the others, which further decimates their number. Meanwhile the Communist Party has changed its position and is supporting Marighella's people in public representation. A radio station can be "hijacked" at short notice and a newspaper disseminates the manifesto sent with it. Contrary to Marighella's instructions to “stand still” for a short time, his people kidnap the new US ambassador without authorization, but at the same time the secret service succeeds in locating the hiding place of several conspirators and eliminating them. Marighella, who had sent his son abroad for his safety, wants to see him again after a long time. He asked a friend of his Catholic priest for help. He managed to escape the ambush that was set up, but when he met the tortured clergyman again, he was executed by the secret service.

criticism

Fabian Wall Meier from RBB saw "a largely unbroken epic adventure that runs tough about his two and a half hours." .

Kai Müller writes in the Tagesspiegel : “What is laid out as a sad story about the fatal momentum of violence will soon turn into a revenge drama between Marighella and his hunter, Inspector Lúcio.” At the same time, he criticizes: “Everyone is always terribly moved while they the next moment they pull out their guns and have wild shootings with their pursuers from the state police. This is revolutionary kitsch. " .
