Mario Cantaluppi (born April 11, 1974 in Schlieren ) is a former Swiss football player and today's coach.

Career

society

His professional career began at Grasshoppers Zurich , where he made his debut in the then National League A in the 1990/91 season . In his first season as a professional he was able to celebrate his first title, the Grasshoppers became Swiss champions , Cantaluppi himself only made eight games, but was able to score one goal. For the Zurich club he came to 41 more missions in the following two seasons, in which he was able to score two goals. At the beginning of the 1993/94 season he moved to the National League B in Basel . Here, too, he stayed for three years and made 71 appearances (5 goals) for FC Basel , who made it up in Cantaluppi's first season. The move to Servette Geneva followed in the summer of 1996 . Here he played 46 times in two seasons and hit the opponent's goal four times.

The move back to FC Basel in the summer of 1998 turned out to be the most successful step in his career to date. After a season of acclimatization, in which he only made seven appearances (but two goals), he was able to play in the regular formation of FC Basel in the 1999/2000 season. In the years that followed, Cantaluppi remained an important pillar of the then eight-time Swiss master . In 2001/02 and 2003/04 he was able to contribute to the ninth and tenth championship of the FCB and won the Swiss Cup in 2001/02 and 2002/03 . The highlight of his career so far also came in the 2002/03 season, when FC Basel reached the second round of the Champions League and knocked out Celtic Glasgow and Liverpool FC along the way . Cantaluppi made eleven games in the main round and missed only one game there.

After FC Basel failed to qualify for the 2004/05 Champions League, after the start of the season he moved from FC Basel, for which he had played 145 games since 1998 (15 goals), to the German Bundesliga for 1. FC Nürnberg . Actually brought in as a defensive midfielder , "Lupo" had to help out as a central defender after a short time . In this position he made a significant contribution to the FCN's relegation and quickly developed into a leading player in his 26 missions for the "club". Therefore, he was appointed team captain by coach Wolfgang Wolf before the start of the 2005/06 season. In this position he drew attention to himself after the bumpy start to the season when he asked the fans for patience and further support in an open letter, but at the same time criticized the team’s performance so far.

After he had been a support in the defense of 1. FC Nürnberg for two years, he and the club surprisingly dissolved the contract in 2006 one year before it expired by mutual agreement. Cantaluppi returned to Switzerland, where he received a three-year contract with the newly promoted SL FC Luzern . At the beginning of January 2008, after only one and a half years, he moved to the Belgian first division club VV St. Truiden , with whom he finished the 2009/10 season in an impressive 4th place. In summer 2010 Cantaluppi returned to Switzerland and took over the post of player-coach in just the first league ascended SC Buochs . In autumn 2011 he trained the U-13-Juniors / C-Promotion of FC Basel . On September 20, 2013 it was announced that Cantaluppi will be working as an assistant coach under Jean-Michel Aeby at the traditional club Servette FC Genève . After his release, Cantaluppi was head coach with José Sinval for a few months. After the commitment of the Englishman Kevin Cooper , he became his assistant coach.

From November 2015 to March 2016, Cantaluppi was assistant coach at FC Wil 1900 , also under Cooper . Cantaluppi has been a trainer at SR Delémont since the 2017/18 season.

National team

The national team chapter had to put Cantaluppi on hold in August 2003, after 24 appearances and four goals. He made his debut in the national jersey in March 2000 against Norway . Due to personal differences with national coach Köbi Kuhn , he has not been nominated for the Swiss selection since preparing for the Euro 2004 .
