The adjective maritime ( Latin maritimus 'belonging to the sea' ) denotes an influence of the sea . In contrast to the adjective marin , the term maritime is used in particular when it comes to uses of the sea by humans or a viewpoint related to humans. That is why one speaks of maritime technology, but also of marine mineral resources or marine ecosystems .

• A maritime climate is one that is shaped by the influence of the sea. Compared to the continental climate, it is characterized by lower temperature fluctuations and higher average humidity.
• The maritime economy encompasses all branches of industry that are directly or indirectly related to the sea and is one of the most important economic sectors in Germany. In addition to shipping , the maritime economy also includes the maritime industry (see below) and, strictly speaking, maritime tourism.
• The maritime industry includes the industries that manufacture products that are used at sea. These include in particular
  • the maritime supply industry
  • Shipyards
  • Port operations
  • fish processing industry
  • Oil and gas production at sea, for example by drilling rigs.
• Maritime technology is used specifically at sea or in the sea, especially offshore technology.
• Coastal landscapes that are particularly characterized by the sea and shipping are called maritime landscapes .
• " Maritime sociology " is commonly used to classify everything that, in the sociological sense, relates to the use of the oceans for or by the marine , shipping, seafaring , energy and raw material extraction, seaports , coastal protection , water sports on, in or on the sea and by the lake has to do with cultural peculiarities.
• In the fine arts there are numerous special maritime forms, e.g. B. when decorating buildings with ornaments with sea motifs; or also with interior furnishings (e.g. Pomeranian fisherman's carpets ). The marine painting dedicated to the representation of the sea.
