Mark Berger (sound engineer)

Mark Berger (born May 14, 1943 in San Francisco , California ) is an American sound engineer .

Life

Berger studied experimental psychology at the University of California, Berkeley , but then found an interest in sound engineering and began his career in film and television, initially with documentaries . His talent was discovered by the sound engineer Walter Murch , who wanted to hire him for Francis Ford Coppola's film The Dialog . Due to other commitments, Berger declined, but received another offer for The Godfather - Part II , his film debut. Only a few years later it was nominated for the first time for the BAFTA Film Award in the category Best Sound , and in 1977 it went empty for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest . Between 1980 and 1997 he was nominated four times for the Oscar in the category Best Sound and won the award every time.

Berger is a professor of film at the University of California, Berkeley.
