Mark Polizzotti

Mark Polizzotti (born July 22, 1957 in Oceanside , Nassau County , New York ) is an American writer, literary translator and publisher.

Life

Mark Polizzotti studied French literary history. He stayed in Paris for a year in 1974 and became friends with the writer Maurice Roche , for whom he then tried his first translation.

Polizzotti worked as an editor and editor at book publishers, so at Random House (1983–1985), Grove Weidenfeld (1985–1990) and David R. Godine, Publisher (1993–1999). He then went to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as a publicist . At the Museum of Modern Art (Moma) he published exhibition catalogs on Edgar Degas (1997), the collector Paul Gachet (1999), Ambroise Vollard (2006) and Pierre Bonnard (2009). In 2010 he moved to Moma as director of museum publications. He writes for The New Republic, The Wall Street Journal, ARTnews, The Nation, Parnassus, Partisan Review and Bookforum, among others.

Polizzotti has translated more than 40 literary works from French into English, including authors such as Jean Baudrillard , André Breton , René Daumal , Marguerite Duras , Jean Echenoz , Gustave Flaubert ( Bouvard and Pécuchet ), Patrick Modiano , Francis Picabia , Maurice Roche and Franck Thilliez . He is the author of several monographs and in 2018 wrote a book on translation whose title Sympathy for the Traitor refers to the Italian idiom traduttore traditore .

"A common misperception is that one needs to transpose the source text as literally as possible in order to remain" faithful "to the author's intention; but the reality is, one constantly needs to interrogate the text, try to get behind it, and adapt when necessary, in order to bring forth the life of what the author said. In other words, it's all about editing.
The translator has to assimilate the text, and as much of what surrounds it as possible, in order to produce a version that credibly represents what the original author had written. "

He sees Louis Wolfson's autobiographical work Le Schizo et les langues from 1970 as a particular challenge for a translator, but Wolfson has determined that his work should never be translated into English.

Polizzotti's translation of the children's book Star of Fear, Star of Hope by Jo Hoestland received the Mildred L. Batchelder Award in 1996 .
