Markaryd is a locality ( tätort ) in Sweden and the main town in the municipality of Markaryd . It is located near the European route 4 , which connects Helsingborg with northern Sweden, including Stockholm , and is located in the far south in the province of Kronobergs län and the historic province of Småland .
history
In the 17th century, Markaryd was an important border town with Denmark , which owned what is now southern Sweden until the Peace of Roskilde . In order to establish a postal connection to Stockholm, one of the country's first post offices was set up in Markaryd. From 1638, the post office began delivering from Denmark and the rest of Europe to Stockholm. After Sweden conquered the southern part of Skåne , Markaryd lost its position as a border town.
At the end of the 19th century, the two rail links Åstorp - Jönköping and Hässleholm - Halmstad were built in Sweden . The two lines met in Markaryd, so the place gained in importance at this time and grew into a railway junction. All but one of the formerly important routes have been closed over time; only one connection between Hässleholm and Halmstad is still in operation today. This route is mainly used by freight traffic. Until the opening of the Hallandsås tunnel in 2015, it was also used temporarily by the Swedish X2000 high-speed train for the connections Malmö - Gothenburg or Malmö - Stockholm / Oslo , but without a stop in Markaryd. Since December 15, 2013, Markaryd has been the terminus of line 7 of the Pågatåg regional train from Hässleholm. There is no passenger train connection in the direction of Halmstad (as of July 2017).
Today Markaryd is a place where numerous industrial companies are based, for example the most important Swedish stove manufacturer Nibe / Contura.
