Markus Appel

Markus Appel (born May 3, 1973 in Bad Hersfeld ) is a German psychologist , media researcher and author .

Life

Appel studied psychology and cultural studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He received his doctorate in 2004 from the University of Cologne under Norbert Groeben . From 2005 he worked as a research associate, from 2008 as assistant professor and from 2010 as associate professor at the Johannes Kepler University Linz . Appel was visiting scholar at the University of Bergen , New York University and UNSW Sydney .

From 2013 to 2017 he headed the media psychology work unit at the University of Koblenz-Landau . In 2017 he became professor of communication psychology and new media at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg .

Appel's research focuses on media and technology research. He examines the processes during the reception of fictional stories and the resulting effects on attitudes , self-concept and behavior (“narrative persuasion ”). He also looks at the effects and correlates of online and mobile media usage. Among other things, he examined the scientific content of the popular scientific theses on " digital dementia ". Other fields of research include psychological issues relating to the spread of humanoid robots, the effect of stereotypes on human experience and behavior (“ stereotype threat ”) and the psychological processes involved in the dissemination and processing of false reports (“ fake news ”). Markus Appel has published articles in high-profile journals (including Communication Research , Self and Identity ).
