Markus Szyszkowitz (born August 4, 1966 in Graz ) is an Austrian caricaturist and comic artist who was best known for his daily comic strip series “Superrudi und Superstruppi” in the Kronen Zeitung from 1998 to 2009 .

life and work

Markus Szyszkowitz comes from a Graz artist family. Grandfather Rudolf Szyszkowitz was a well-known Austrian painter, father Peter Szyszkowitz is also a painter, mother Brigitte Szyszkowitz a restorer . After the AHS - graduation he attended at first next to the architectural studies at the Technical University of Graz also founded by the grandfather of master classes for painting at the Graz Ortweinschule . During his studies he worked with architect Günther Domenig, among others . In 1991/92 he was given a nine-month study visit to Madrid through the COMMETT EC scholarship , where he worked for architect Ignacio Vicens y Hualde.

After graduating in 1994, he first worked at Coop Himmelb (l) au until 1996, then at Diether S. Hoppe . In 1997 he was drafted into military service. While studying in Graz, he published the comic book Die Grazer Wunderwaffe (1988). Towards the end of his military service, Szyszkowitz sent the comic book to the editor of the Kronen Zeitung , Hans Dichand . He accepted the subsequent offer to draw a daily political comic strip for the Kronen Zeitung and renounced the work he had already started in the studio of the architect Massimiliano Fuksas in Rome.

From March 1st, 1998 the comic strip Superrudi & Superstruppi was published daily . He also drew political cartoons for other newspapers, such as “ Die Presse ”, the Wiener Zeitung and the trade union newspaper Solidarity .

One of Szyszkowitz's cartoons that appeared in the Wiener Zeitung in July 2008 caused tension with Hans Dichand.

In June 2009 his drawing work for the "Kronen Zeitung" ended. Since October 2009 he has been drawing regularly for “Die Presse” and since January 2010 also for the Tiroler Tageszeitung .

With his own drawing style and his own "biography" - under the pseudonym Rachel Gold - he had resumed his work for the Wiener Zeitung shortly after the official termination in October 2008 and at around the same time began to work for the Tiroler Tageszeitung, where he is now has been alternating under both identities since 2010. In an interview published on MSNBC in February 2011 with his US colleague Daryl Cagle and shortly thereafter in a live radio broadcast on Global Journalist Radio in Columbia, USA, he made the pseudonym known to a wider public for the first time. Since February 2011, his cartoons have also been distributed internationally via the MSNBC editorial cartoon platform.

Since 1987 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KÖHV Carolina Graz in the ÖCV .
