Markus Zürcher (born February 24, 1946 in Herisau, canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden ; † February 16, 2013 in Sedrun , canton of Graubünden ) was a Swiss artist. He was a representative of conceptual art and minimalism .

biography

Zürcher completed his initial training as a window dresser in St. Gallen , after which he relocated to Bern . As a result, he attended free art courses and worked as a set designer . From 1971 to 1976 he studied painting with KRH Sonderborg at the Stuttgart Art Academy , then sculpture and painting with Eberhard Fiebig at the Kassel University , which he completed in 1983 with a diploma.

With his linear, minimalist works he is an important representative of conceptual art, his radical implementations helped him to work on works by Lawrence Weiner , Daniel Buren , Meret Oppenheim and Robert Filliou .

Markus Zürcher was active in the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects , but largely withdrew from the active art scene in the early 1990s. However, since 2000 he has been increasingly active again, mainly in the field of painting and theoretical, conceptual work.

Zürcher lived in Bern , Vienna , Stuttgart , Kassel , Rome , Budapest , Herisau and Urnäsch .

Works and projects

His early work bears witness to a decidedly radical approach to minimal forms; the use of colors was largely avoided. Small editions of lithographs were created that underlined this attitude. The more recent works play concretely with the medium of color and aim at Op Art effects that have a uniform, conceptual structure as a whole.

In collaboration with the writer Raphael Urweider , a small «graphic edition with literary aspects» was created. A large-format mural was created in the Kunsthalle Bern , the pigment of which consisted entirely of dirt from the Kunsthalle.

In November 2009, as part of the BürokARTie campaign in Münster , organized and curated by Ruppe Koselleck , Oliver Breitenstein and Stephan Us , he gave his performative lecture “Patterns without value”.

2012 showed Zurich was responsible for the conception and curation of ART-TAT-ORT in Progr , which continues to be used as an art space from Progr.

Exhibitions and prizes

His works are u. a. in the Donald Hess Collection in California , in the art collection of Winterthur Insurance , and in the collection of the cantonal art commission of the canton of Bern. In 2012, large-format watercolors were bought by the Kunstmuseum Bern .

Various public works were created, e.g. B. in the grammar school Neufeld in Bern. Zürcher received a. a. the Kiefer Hablützel scholarship in 1976, the Louise Aeschlimann scholarship in 1977 and a prize from the UBS Kulturstiftung in 2005.

Markus Zürcher is Schubladenmuseum of Herbert Distel in the Kunsthaus Zurich represented.
