Mart Siimer

Mart Siimer (born October 27, 1967 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian composer.

Life

Siimer began composing under the guidance of Anne Metsala when he was a student at the Tallinn Children's Music School and played the organ from the age of twelve . At the Tallinn Music High School he studied piano with Laine Mets and composition with Eino Tamberg . In addition to studying mathematics at the University of Tartu , he continued his studies with Tamberg at the Estonian Music Academy from 1986 to 1990 .

In 1992/93 he completed his training at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo with Bjørn Howard Kruse . This was followed by a master’s degree from 1996 to 1998 with Christopher Rouse , James Willey and Augusta Read Thomas at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester (New York) . In 2004 he submitted his dissertation on Olivier Messiaen at the Estonian Music Academy .

Siimer taught a. a. at the Estonian Music High School (1992/93) and the Conservatory (1994–96) in Tallinn. In 1998/99 he was a lecturer in composition and music theory at the private Universidad Javeriana in Colombia . Since 1999 he has been teaching at the Estonian Academy of Music and Drama . He also worked as a music critic and editor of the magazine Teater. Muusika. Kino , employee of the Estonian Theater and Music Museum (1993 to 1996) and from 1988 to 2004 with interruptions organist at the Church of St. Peter and Paul in the Estonian capital.

Compositions

In addition to choral music , Siimer composed symphonic works, chamber music and pieces for solo instruments. In 1988 he received first prize in the competition of young Soviet composers in Moscow in the choral music category, and in 1992 second prize in the competition for sacred choral works in Amiens .

Choral works by him were u. a. Performed at the Songbridge Festival in Newfoundland (2003), at the Arvo Pärt Festival in Groningen and at the Songfest Sydänten Laulusilta in Pori, Finland in 2007.
