Marta Ptaszyńska

Marta Ptaszyńska (born March 29, 1943 in Warsaw ) is a Polish composer, percussionist and music teacher.

Ptaszyńska studied composition with Tadeusz Paciorkiewicz at the State Music Academy in Warsaw and percussion with Mikołaj Stasiniewicz and Jerzy Zgodziński at the State Music Academy in Poznan . She also took private composition lessons with Witold Lutosławski . In 1968 she completed her studies with a master's degree in composition, music theory and percussion. As a scholarship holder of the French government, she studied with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen as well as electronic music at the ORTF center in Paris from 1969–70 . She completed her training as a percussionist in collaboration with Cloyd Duff , Richard Weiner and Donald Erb at the Cleveland Institute of Music , where she received a diploma in 1974.

From 1970 Ptaszyńska taught first in Warsaw, later a. a. at Bennington College in Vermont, the University of California at Berkeley and Santa Barbara and Indiana University and gave seminars and guest lectures at other universities and music schools in the USA. In 1994 and 1996 she taught composition and analysis of 20th century music at Northwestern University, and in 1995 she was composer-in-residence at the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. In 1997 she was visiting professor at the University of Chicago , then professor of composition at Indiana University in Bloomington and the University of Chicago.

In 1968 Ptaszyńska won the second prize at the UNESCO composers' rostrum . She was awarded three times (1974, 1976 and 1987) by the Percussive Arts Society . The Polish Composers Union honored her with a medal in 1988. Her compositions have been performed at numerous international festivals (including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Warschauer Herbst and the Aspen Festival ), and musicians such as Yehudi Menuhin , Matthias Bamert , Jerzy Maksymiuk , Keiko Abe , Bertram Turetzky , Nancy Allen , Roman Jabłoński and Ewa Podleś played world premieres of their works.
