Martin-Sebastian Abel (2015)

Martin-Sebastian Abel (born May 8, 1985 in Leipzig as Martin-Sebastian Hagen) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ).

Life

Martin-Sebastian Abel was four years old when his mother and him fled to the Federal Republic of Germany via the German Embassy in Prague in 1989 . From 2005 to 2011 he studied Protestant theology at the Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal / Bethel and at the Ruhr University Bochum with the aim of becoming a pastor, but then completed his studies in religious studies at the Ruhr University Bochum. In addition to his studies, he worked from 2008 to 2010 for the then parliamentary managing director and environmental policy spokesman for the Greens parliamentary group in North Rhine-Westphalia , Johannes Remmel , and from 2010 to 2012 for the state parliament member Stefan Engstfeld . Immediately after his time as a member of the state parliament (2012–2017), he moved to NRW.BANK , the development bank of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

politics

Abel has been a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen since 2002. From 2003 to 2006 he was on the state board of the Green Youth of North Rhine-Westphalia. From 2007 to 2016 he was active as the spokesman for the state working group for culture of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen NRW.

At the age of 20, he was the youngest direct candidate in Düsseldorf for the 2005 state election . From 2009 to 2014 he was a member of District Representation 2 (districts of Flingern and Düsseltal ). In 2010, 2012 and 2017 Abel ran again for the direct mandate in the state electoral district of Düsseldorf IV , in which he was defeated by Peter Preuß (CDU) and Walburga Benninghaus (SPD). In 2010 he ran for the first time on the state list of the Greens and barely missed entry into the state parliament with list position 26. For the 2012 election, he was able to move up to the state parliament on November 2, 2012 as a member of the state parliament for the Minister for Schools and Further Education, Sylvia Löhrmann , with position 30 on the list, due to the separation of office and mandate . With the state election in 2017, Abel left the state parliament because his relatively good ranking on the list was not enough to return to the state parliament if the Greens achieved a relatively weak result.

In the state parliament he was a member of the committees for culture and media as well as innovation, science and research until he was elected spokesman for budget and financial policy of his group in early 2015. Since then he has been chairman of the budget and finance committee and the subcommittee on personnel of the state parliament. He was also chairman of the commission of inquiry to assess the sustainability of the state budget of the state parliament, which worked from 2013 to 2015. He remained a deputy member of the Committee on Culture and Media and the Committee on Climate Protection, Environment, Nature Conservation, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.

As spokesman for animal welfare policy in his parliamentary group, Martin-Sebastian Abel was particularly committed to a center for animal-free methods, which was finally set up in 2015 at the Leibniz Institute in Düsseldorf.

Positions

In the course of the discussion about the retirement pension of the former Mayor of Düsseldorf Dirk Elbers , Abel and his colleague Markus Weske (SPD) called for a reform of the rules for the remuneration of mayors, mayors and district administrators in North Rhine-Westphalia. Both MPs suggested for retired electoral officials that after they were entitled to a transitional allowance, a pension should only be paid out when they reached the age limit. In the course of the reform of the service law, the state parliament decided in 2016 to abolish the regulation for an immediate pension.

Abel has taken a stand against the commissioning of Bayer AG's controversial CO pipeline .

He is committed to the protection of dolphins and opposes dolphinariums in zoos. He supports the NABU and the NRW partner zoos to accompany the return of the wolf to NRW and to inform the population by sponsoring a wolf in the Wuppertal zoo.

Others

In 2015 Abel collected donations for the “GuteNachtBus” project, which helps the homeless in Düsseldorf, during a charity run.

He is a member of several associations and organizations, such as Pro Asyl , Greenpeace , NABU , Förderkreis Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Düsseldorf, Fortuna Düsseldorf and Freundeskreis Amerika Haus NRW. He is also a committed transatlantic and participated in the IVLP exchange program of the US Department of State .
