Martin Bührle (born May 19, 1934 in Göppingen ; † May 18, 2017 ) was a German sports scientist , university professor , track and field athlete and athletics trainer.

Life

Bührle first played handball in his hometown of Göppingen , switched to athletics after a knee injury and specialized in the disciplines of the shot put , discus throw and hammer throw . Later, pole vault added. In 1952, the TS Göppingen athlete improved the Württemberg youth record to 47.17 m in the discus throw. In 1951 Bührle was second in the discus of the German youth championship. In the jersey of the USC Heidelberg Bührle was German discus champion in 1957, second in 1955, 1958 and 1959. He took part in student world championships and international competitions. Later he was national coach in the throwing and pushing disciplines.

His doctoral thesis, which he accepted at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg in 1970 , was entitled “The social educational function of sport”. In 1971 he took up a C4 professorship at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , was appointed head of the newly created chair for physical exercise theory and, as the successor to Woldemar Gerschler, became director of the Institute for Physical Exercise (later the Institute for Sport and Sports Science). He was director of the institute until 1999 when he left university.

Bührle was described as a "scientific pioneer in sports science". His scientific focus included strength training , including aspects such as maximum and speed strength training, strength training in children and adolescents and strength components in high-performance sport. He researched neurophysiological aspects of strength adaptation and strength training and was one of the first in exercise science to do so. Under his leadership, Freiburg Sports Science became "one of the most important national and international centers for studying the mechanisms of adaptation to strength training". At an early age he worked with sports medicine. As a member of the sports committee of the city of Freiburg, Bührle played a decisive role in the new construction of the Freiburg-Black Forest Olympic base . Dietmar Schmidtbleicher , later professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, is one of his students .
