Martin S. Feldstein
Martin Stuart Feldstein (born November 25, 1939 in New York City - † June 11, 2019 in Boston ) was an American economist . He was the George F. Baker Professor of Economics at Harvard University and Chairman of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Feldstein was chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and chief economic advisor to US President Ronald Reagan from 1982 to 1984. From 1987 to 2009 he was on the board of directors of the American International Group , Inc.
Live and act
Feldstein received his bachelor's degree from Harvard in 1961 and his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 1967 and has been a professor at Harvard since 1969. His significant work includes studies of the impact of PAYG pension systems on macroeconomic saving . He came to the conclusion that PAYG systems have a negative impact on capital formation. Therefore, Feldstein campaigned for a reform of the American social security system. His reform proposals found their way into President George W. Bush's plans to create private retirement accounts. Feldstein's proposals went further, however, for he proposed a complete replacement of the current system with private accounts. This - so he argues - enables savers a higher interest rate on their assets and at the same time would increase national savings.
He was the author of more than 300 research papers and is best known for his work in the fields of macroeconomics and econometrics . In addition to his work in numerous societies in some high-ranking positions, Feldstein was a member of the Trilateral Commission and the American Council on Foreign Relations . Since 1996, he has participated in the Bilderberg Conferences a total of 15 times (1996, 1998, 1999, 2001–2003, 2005–2008, 2010, 2011, 2013–2015) .
In 2004, Feldstein served as the President- Elect of the American Economic Association . He died in June 2019 at the age of 79.
