Martin Imboden

Martin Imboden (born November 10, 1893 in Stans , Nidwalden , † August 19, 1935 in Zurich ) was a Swiss photographer .
Life
Martin Imboden was born in Niederdorf in Stans as the son of a herdsman and grew up in Oberdorf and Stans. From 1909 to 1912 he completed an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker, which was followed by years of traveling as a journeyman carpenter in Switzerland and France from 1913 to 1917. From 1918 to 1929 he worked as a carpenter in Basel and Zurich. Around 1923 he began taking pictures in his spare time, especially landscapes, portraits and dance shots. His first photo report appeared in 1925 .
From 1929 he became self-employed as a photographer and went on a hike. His first place of residence was Vienna , where he attended courses at the Urania public education center and at the Tonikerschule of the Photo Secession Vienna . In Vienna he took pictures of the municipal housing in the Red Vienna , studies in Gertrud Kraus' dance school, portraits, street scenes and regular publications in the magazine Der Kuckuck . From Vienna he went on reporting trips to the Balkans, Europe and North Africa. After the February uprising in Vienna in 1934, he moved to Paris. Between his travels he lived and worked in Zurich. He had a fatal accident on a bicycle at the age of 42.

Imboden's work reflects the tension between amateur, worker and avant-garde photography . As a deeply human observer, he created impressive social documentary images. He found connection to various artistic directions between art photography and new photography . His pictures have been published in the following newspapers and magazines, among others: Basler Illustrierte, Die Bühne (Vienna), Camera , Föhn , Paris Magazine (Paris); Profil (Vienna), Zeitbilder (Tages-Anzeiger, Zurich), Schweizer Illustrierte Zeitung, Zürcher Illustrierte. The international distribution of his photographs was carried out by the Schostal agency . He worked for numerous schools of free dance . He portrayed dancers such as Gertrud Kraus , Jula and Eric Isenburger . His estate is at the Swiss Foundation for Photography in Winterthur.
