Martinus Cornelis Koeman (born July 26, 1938 in Purmerend , † December 18, 2013 in Leeuwarden ) was a Dutch football player . He played for Blauw-Wit Amsterdam and Groningen in the Eredivisie and was used once in the national team in 1964 . Martin Koeman was the father of the former Dutch national team and current soccer coach Erwin and Ronald Koeman . He died in December 2013 at the age of 75 of complications from cardiac arrest.

Club career

Koeman began his career as a teenager with the amateur club VV Purmersteijn. In 1957 he moved to Kooger FC in the Tweede Divisie , three years later Blauw-Wit brought him to Amsterdam . With the predecessor club of FC Amsterdam , he rose to the Eredivisie in 1961. After two years in blue and white, he went to Groningen VAV , for which he was active in the top division until 1970. He was actually an attacking player, but was mainly used in midfield. During the day he also did a regular job in a Groningen butcher shop. After relegation in 1970, the professional department was outsourced from GVAV and FC Groningen was founded, which was promoted back to the honor division in the following season. By the end of the 1973/74 season Koeman played 52 times for the Northern Dutch in the top division, plus two cup games. After relegation from Groningen, he let his active career end with a season at the then second division club VV Heerenveen . He then returned to the FCG, where he worked as a trainer, mainly in youth work, as well as technical director and in the scouting area until shortly before his death. In 2011 a grandstand was named after Martin, Erwin and Ronald Koeman in the Euroborg stadium in Groningen .

National team

Bond coach Elek Schwartz appointed the Groninger to the Oranje Elftal district as early as 1963. But Koeman only sat on the bench six times before he went on his first assignment. On April 12, 1964 in the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium , he came on in the 73rd minute for Feijenoord player Piet Kruiver . It shouldn't be more than these 18 minutes against Austria - besides his Groningen teammate Klaas Nuninga - in Oranje - which, in Koeman's opinion, was due on the one hand to the fact that he played in Groningen and not at one of the big clubs in the Netherlands, and on the other that he couldn't get past players like Bennie Muller and Reinier Kreijermaat . Nevertheless, he was happy that he could pass on his experience as a national player to his sons.
