Martin Machowecz

Martin Machowecz (* 1988 in Meißen ) is a German journalist . Since 2017 he has headed the office of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit in Leipzig . In 2018 he was awarded the Thuringian Journalism Prize.

Life

Martin Machowecz grew up in Meissen. In his youth he founded a school newspaper . He began as an author for the Sächsische Zeitung to work first in the local section, later in the culture and society department, before studying political science in Leipzig . From 2008 to 2010 he attended the German School of Journalism in Munich . He has been an editor for Die Zeit since 2011 . In October 2017 he took over the management of the newspaper's Leipzig office, which produces the three regional pages “Time in the East” every week, which appear in the five new federal states. Together with his team, he also reports for the national edition as a correspondent from East Germany. Machowecz also writes for the features section. His interview with the painter Neo Rauch received media attention .

For years Machowecz has been grappling with the social tensions that became visible in East Germany through Pegida and the rise of the AfD. His article “We are against it!” About the AfD Saxony-Anhalt was nominated in 2017 for the Theodor Wolff Prize .

In 2018 he was part of the panel of experts in the television program Presseclub (WDR) and was a guest on the program Anne Will after the state elections in Saxony and Brandenburg in 2019 .
