Martin Schiller (born March 8, 1982 in Vienna ) is an Austrian - British basketball coach . Since July 2020 he has been the coach of Žalgiris Kaunas in Lithuania .

Career

Schiller is the son of an Austrian father and a British mother and was born in Vienna . He grew up from the age of ten in Aumühle near Hamburg in Germany and has both Austrian and British citizenship. He played basketball for the Hamburg club TSG Bergedorf and was the captain of the TSG team, which, under the leadership of Boris Schmidt as a coach, reached third place in the German A youth championship in 2000 . After graduating from high school, he began studying at the German Sport University in Cologne , which he completed in 2005 with a degree in sports economics . During his studies he worked as a trainer in the youth of RheinEnergie Cologne and as assistant trainer for the second division club Düsseldorf Magics .

Between 2005 and 2007, Schiller worked in various functions for TSG Bergedorf, including as a trainer, manager and youth leader. In August 2007 he went to WBC Wels , where he also headed the youth department and was also assistant coach for the Bundesliga team. After three years in Austria, Schiller returned to Germany and took over the position of assistant coach at the Bundesliga club Artland Dragons in Quakenbrück, Lower Saxony . In the summer of 2015, he was a coaching assistant on the staff of the German senior team under Chris Fleming , where he was responsible for the areas of enemy detection and video work.

From 2015 to 2017 he worked as assistant to head coach John Patrick for the Bundesliga club MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg .

In August 2017 he took over the coaching position for the Salt Lake City Stars in the North American NBA Gatorade League (NBA G-League). In the 2019/20 season he was named Coach of the Year in the NBA G-League, after the team had previously won 30 season games and lost twelve under his leadership, thus having the best record in the Western Conference . Between mid-November 2019 and late December 2019, Salt Lake City remained undefeated in 14 games in a row under his leadership. With 106.1 permitted points per match, his team was second in the league in this statistical ranking. In the summer of 2020 he signed a contract as head coach of the top Lithuanian team Žalgiris Kaunas (also participating in the Euroleague ).
