Martin Schmid (painter)
Martin Schmid (born August 4, 1927 in Tübingen ; † December 7, 2019 in Tübingen) was a contemporary German painter . In the early post-war years he was an important representative of the New Figuration with his artistic work . 1970–1992 he headed the drawing institute of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen as a university drawing teacher .
biography
Martin Schmid was born in 1927 as the son of Carlo Schmid in Tübingen and grew up there. After returning from captivity, he pursued university studies in Tübingen and Basel from 1945 to 1948 . In 1948 he made symbolist drawings. A stay in Paris followed from 1949 to 1952 . After a semester at Fernand Léger's school (1949), Schmid concentrated on self-taught drawing and painting. Informal drawings emerged. From 1950 a new figuration and individual mythology emerged.
In 1953 and 1954 Schmid studied at the Stuttgart Art Academy with Gerhard Gollwitzer and Hermann Sohn , and in 1959 with Georg Meistermann in Düsseldorf . From 1953 to 1958 he worked as a teacher at the Leibniz College in Tübingen. In 1960 the murals on the facade and in the café of the Marl Theater were created.
In 1960 Schmid received a scholarship in the Villa Massimo , Rome. After returning he moved to Frankfurt am Main . He married in 1961. In 1964 and 1968 the two sons were born.
In 1970 Martin Schmid was appointed to the drawing institute at the University of Tübingen. The family moved to Tübingen. This was followed by teaching until 1992. A generation of young artists was influenced by Martin Schmid. In 1987 he became an associate professor. In 1989 a large mural was created in the new clinic of the University of Tübingen.
Martin Schmid was a member of the German Association of Artists . He worked and lived in Tübingen until his death.
