Dragonette is an electro-pop band from Canada . It was founded in 2005 and consists of front woman Martina Sorbara, producer and bassist Dan Kurtz, guitarist Chris Hugget and drummer Joel Stouffer.
Career
Sorbara and Kurtz met at a music festival and founded the duo The Fuzz, whose music they recorded in their own basement. After these recordings, they formed Dragonette and performed with New Order on their second live performance . In 2005, Dragonette EP was released , after which they signed a record deal with Mercury / Universal.
They decided to move from Canada to London, recorded their debut album Galore and opened up for artists such as Basement Jaxx , The Sounds and the Sugababes . They also appeared as headliners at smaller concerts. With the relocation to London, guitarist Simon Craig was replaced by Will Stapleton. The first music videos appeared on the Internet shortly afterwards, including the video for the first single I Get Around , which reached number 92 on the British charts. The following single, Take It Like A Man , was also not a major mainstream success.
The release of I Get Around in Canada ranked 57th and earned the band a nomination for the Juno Award for Best Newcomer Band . Their cover version The Girls ( The Boys ), originally by Calvin Harris , also had some airplay successes. In addition, Sobara and Kurtz wrote the title Grab a Hold for Cyndi Lauper , which appeared on Lauper's 2008 album Bring Ya to the Brink .
The early summer of 2009 saw the release of a new download single, Fixin to Thrill , from the album of the same name, which was released in Canada in September 2009, and a collaboration with French house musician Martin Solveig , Boys & Girls . The song was used as the theme song for the television show The Bachelor in 2012 .
The band achieved greater fame in German-speaking countries with the single Hello , also a collaboration with Martin Solveig. This reached the top 10 of the single charts in Germany as well as in Austria and Switzerland. In Austria it became a number one hit. In Canada it was the group's most successful single.
