biography

Martine Franck spent her childhood in England and the USA . From 1956 to 1957 she studied history at the University of Madrid and from 1958 to 1962 at the École du Louvre in Paris .

She made her first experiences as a photographer in 1963 in the Far East . In 1964 she worked as a photo assistant in the laboratory of Life magazine in Paris. Franck began working as a freelancer in 1965. In 1970 she went to the VU agency and founded the Viva agency in 1972 . She became an associate member of Magnum Photos in 1980 and a full member in 1983.

Martine Franck was married to the legendary photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson († 2004), one of the co-founders of Magnum Photos , since 1970 . Among other things, she managed her husband's estate at the Fondation Henri-Cartier-Bresson and supported other artists. The marriage with Cartier-Bresson resulted in a daughter (* 1972).

Franck's photographic work, mostly in black and white , is characterized by a subtly surreal character ( Le Brusc, South of France , 1976). She took portraits , made reports and aimed her camera lens at landscape motifs or, in the tradition of Cartier-Bresson, looked for spontaneous snapshots with subtle humor.
