The Martinshardt is a 608.5  m high mountain in the northern Siegerland . It is part of the former Müsen mining district .

location

Martinshardt is located east-southeast of Kindelsberg in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Martinshardt, Kindelsberg ( 618  m ) and Hoher Wald ( 655  m ) form the Müsener Horst mountain range , visible from afar as the western foothills of the Rothaargebirge . The Martinshardt is surrounded by the villages of Müsen (northeast), Dahlbruch and Kredenbach (south), and Ferndorf (west), it dominates the western Ferndorftal with the federal highway 508 .

Mining

Around the Martinshardt there are remains of centuries of mining history in the Siegerland :

Stahlberg mine

The Stahlberger Stock is located below the Martinshardt. He supplied the smelters of the northern Siegerland with pig iron , lead , zinc , copper and silver . The Stahlberg mine , located on the Müsen side of the Martinshardt, was at times the largest mine in the region. It was developed from Müsen with the Erbstollen , and from Kreuztal with the Kronprinz-Friedrich-Wilhelm-Erbstollen . In 1931 the mine was closed. At the end of the 1970s, a holiday village was built on the site of the Stahlberg mine .

Wild man

The Wilder Mann mine was located next to the Stahlberg mine . It was closed in 1911. The pit area is still recognizable today through large spoil heaps . An educational mine trail begins in front of the former “Wilder Mann” inn.

Müsener cliffs

To the west of the Wilder Mann mine are the Müsener Klippen: jagged rocks made of ore-free rock, a testament to medieval open-cast mining.

Pit fractures

The pit quarries located at the southern end of the Martinshardt between Müsen and Kredenbach. It was in operation from 1722 to 1891 and from 1931 to 1941. The originally 40 meter deep opencast mines were blown up in 1964.

Others

There is a summit cross on the summit of Martinshardt . Several marked hiking trails lead around the Martinshardt. In addition to the valley locations, the starting point for hikes are the higher-lying car parks on Kindelsberg, Altenberg or at the Bernhard Weiss Clinic in Kredenbach. At the transition to the Kindelsberg is the Hesse stone , a memorial stone for the Haubergs leaders Elias and Wilhelm Wurmbach.

In January 2007, hurricane Kyrill caused severe damage to the forest.
