The church of St. Martin in the southwest German town of Pfullingen in the district of Reutlingen / Baden-Württemberg is the oldest church building in the city. It is located in the city center on the market square.

It is considered to be the “ original church ” of the medieval Pfullichgau . According to archaeological research, its origins go back to the Christianization of the Alemanni in the 7th century. This makes the Martinskirche, including its predecessor buildings located on the same site, one of the most historic Christian sacred buildings in Württemberg .

Martin's Church, evangelical since the Reformation in the 16th century, is named after Martin of Tours, who is venerated as a saint across all Christian denominations . Organizationally, today's Martinskirchen community belongs to the EKD as a member of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg .

As a cultural monument , the St. Martin's Church in Pfullingen is under monument protection according to the provisions of the Baden-Württemberg Monument Protection Act .

history

During a major renovation in the Martinskirche in 1962, older building fragments were discovered during work on the foundation, which indicated that another church building was already standing before the completion of the Gothic-style church, which was dated to 1463 . As a result, archaeological excavations were initiated that dragged on for more than a year until 1963 and, layer by layer, revealed a building history that was around 800 years older than previously assumed. The scientifically supported investigations showed that as early as around 620 there was an early Christian wooden church on the site of today's Martinskirche, in addition to grave finds from the Alemannic culture . Around 760 it was renovated as a Carolingian stone church, and around 930 it was rebuilt as an early Romanesque church with a cross-shaped floor plan. The three-aisled Staufer columnar basilica was built in 1150.

The late Gothic choir was built in 1463. The nave was modernized in 1579 and the baroque upper tower floor with an eight-sided pointed helmet was added in 1773. Another renovation took place in 1982. In 2016/17 the need for renovation of the tower was determined. The renovation work began in March 2019 and is scheduled for three years. After the tower, the entire Martinskirche building complex has now been included in the renovation plan.

Community structure

Martinskirchengemeinde is one of three Protestant parish centers in Pfullingen , alongside the much younger parishes of the Magdalenenkirche and the Thomaskirche, which were formed in the second half of the 20th century . With around 4,900 parishioners (as of 2017), it comprises the largest proportion of the entire evangelical parish in Pfullingen. The Martinskirche parish is divided into the parish center , west and east .
