Marton is a city in the Rangitikei District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand . The city is the seat of the Rangitikei District Council .
geography
The city is located about 37 km northwest of Palmerston North and about 6 km west of the Rangitikei River in the wide plain of the river and its tributaries. It is around 18 km to the coast of South Taranaki Bight .
history
Marton was founded in 1866 under the name Tutaenui and renamed Marton in 1869 . Marton was originally an agricultural town, which changed when the North Island Main Trunk Railway ran through the town in 1878, connecting with Palmerston North and Auckland and, via the Marton-New Plymouth Line, with New Plymouth in the northwest. As a result, industrialization took hold . The city still has a textile industry today .

In the 2013 census, the town had 4,548 inhabitants, 2.8% less than in the 2006 census.

Road traffic
Marton is connected by the Calico Line to New Zealand State Highway 1, which passes 3 km to the east . The New Zealand State Highway 3 passes the city about 6 km southwest and can be reached via the Wanganui Road which runs to the west .
Rail transport
Through the city leading North Iceland Main Trunk Railway , the Marton with Auckland in the north and Wellington connects the south. From this line, the Marton-New Plymouth Line branches off to Wanganui and New Plymouth in the city .
