Matatiele ( English Matatiele Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the Alfred Nzo district of the South African province of Eastern Cape . The seat of the municipal administration is in Matatiele . The mayor of the municipality is Momelezi Mthetheleli Mbedla.

The community name is derived from the Sesotho term for "the ducks have flown", a reference to the large number of wetlands in the area that serve as a habitat for the ducks.

In 2011 the community had 203,843 inhabitants. 98.1% of them were black. The first language was 56.9% IsiXhosa , 33.1% Sesotho , 2.9% English, 1.9% IsiZulu and 1.7% Afrikaans.
