Mathias Fischer (born July 30, 1971 in Koźle ) is a German basketball player and coach of Polish  origin.

Life

After graduating from high school in Bonn, Fischer completed a diploma course at the German Sport University in Cologne , which he supplemented from 2003 to 2005 with a course at the trainer academy with a state-recognized diploma basketball trainer.

Athletic performance

As a player, the 1.88 meter tall fisherman was used in the positions of playmaker or shooting guard, among other things he played together with Arvid Kramer and Eric Taylor in the second division team at Telekom Baskets Bonn .

Fischer began his coaching career at Fortuna Bonn and at BG Rentrop Bonn as an assistant to the women's second division team at the side of head coach Anna Stamberger . Then he was assistant coach at the men's second division TV Rhöndorf . At the federal level he was assistant coach in the seasons 2000–2001 and 2002–2003 for the German U20 national team and 2001–2002 and 2003–2004 for the A2 national team. In the basketball Bundesliga he assisted Brandt Hagen in the 2003/2004 season and the RheinEnergie Cologne team in 2004/2005 . For the first time as head coach, Fischer was employed as national coach of Luxembourg in the 2006/2007 season and achieved second place with his team at the "Games of the Small Countries". In the 2007/2008 season he coached the Black Star Mersch from Luxembourg and in 2008/2009 the Kelag Wörthersee Piraten Klagenfurt in the Austrian Admiral Basketball Bundesliga (ABL). After three seasons and the most successful, Fischer was at Allianz Swans Gmunden , winning the championship and the Austrian Cup with his team in 2010. In 2011, in addition to the Supercup, the cup followed again, and the battle for the championship was only lost in the final. In Fischer's third year at Gmunden, the Swans won the trophy and the Supercup in 2012. For the 2012/2013 season, the LTi Gießen 46ers hired Mathias Fischer as head coach. On March 13, 2013, the German Basketball Association engaged Fischer as head coach of the German A2 national team, which he was originally supposed to accompany to the Universiade in Kazan, Russia in July 2013 . On June 5, however, Fischer was hired as the new coach of Telekom Baskets Bonn , so that he gave up the coaching position in the A2 national team in order to be able to devote himself fully to his new job.

At the end of the 2014/2015 season, Fischer extended his contract with Telekom Baskets Bonn until the summer of 2017. After a series of 14 consecutive defeats across all competitions, Fischer was released from his duties in Bonn in December 2015.

On August 9, 2016, it was announced that Mathias Fischer was signed as a coach in Poland with Turów Zgorzelec. The assistant coach at his side was called Michael Claxton . In March 2017 (as in 2013), Fischer also became head coach of the German A2 national team and supervised the selection at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei , where she participated as the German national student team. In November 2017 he became assistant coach for the German senior team under national coach Henrik Rödl. At the end of November 2017, Fischer left Turów Zgorzelec and became head coach of Bundesliga club Walter Tigers Tübingen . But even under Fischer, the Walter Tigers did not want to achieve any sporting success and so the team was relegated to the ProA early on as bottom of the table . In May 2018, the club announced the separation from Mathias Fischer.

For the season 2018/2019 Mathias Fischer was in Macau assistant coach of Macau Black Bears in the cross-border Southeast Asian League ABL. He then moved to Japan and took over the position of head coach for the Nishinomiya Storks team.

Awards

In 2010 and 2012 Mathias Fischer was voted basketball coach of the year in Austria.
