Life

Portrait of Mathias von Flurl on a memorial in the chapel cemetery (Bad Kissingen) , unveiled on July 15, 2017

Originally, he was supposed to be a clergyman, but soon he focused his studies on the field of physics. In 1781 he became a professor in Munich and was also a member of the Illuminati . Soon he developed a taste for mineralogical studies. From 1788 to 1806, Flurl modernized the Nymphenburg porcelain factory as a "factory commissioner". In 1792 he published the first geological overview of Bavaria with the title Description of the Mountains of Baiern and the Upper Palatinate with the first geological map of Bavaria and thus founded the mineralogy and geology in Bavaria. In 1797 he became a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

From 1802 he encouraged Elector Max IV. Joseph to buy various mineral collections , which laid the "foundation" for the Mineralogical State Collection of Munich and the Geoscientific Collection of the State Office for the Environment . He received an annuity for handing over his private collection in 1820, and after his death in 1823 the remainder of his collection was also purchased. In 1820 the "knight", who had been raised to the nobility since 1808, became the head of the royal general mine saltworks and coin administration.

Flurl visited the Staatsbad Kissingen as a Bavarian saltworks inspector. During his stay at the " Upper Saline " in Hausen (today part of Bad Kissingen) he suffered a stroke and was buried the same day in the chapel cemetery in Bad Kissingen. A memorial to him was unveiled there on July 15, 2017.
