The Mattenbach is an approximately 9 kilometer long left tributary of the Eulach in the Swiss canton of Zurich . The stream mainly flows through the city of Winterthur , with short sections in the upper reaches of the municipalities of Schlatt and Elsau .

The brook is the namesake of the Mattenbach district of Winterthur and the Mattenbach media company. In the past, the Zelgli ice rink was prepared with the help of water from the Mattenbach .

Stream course

The Mattenbach in front of the mouth

The stream rises as Chräbsbach above the outer guard Waltenstein the municipality Unterschlatt between the corridors Brüggler and Rank Buchacher to 601  m above sea level. M. After a short run of the river is covered over and crosses several fields and the Elsauer Weiler Tolhusen . It takes up the Lohbach , which is also overturned , and a little later comes to the surface again northeast of the Winterthur outer guard Ricketwil at the Neuguet farm .

The stream flows west past Ricketwil and, followed by Ricketwilerstrasse, reaches a wooded area between the Etzberg and Hulmen hills , in which it has dug itself deep. This Tobel extends to the upper lakes where about 1 km Brno Ibach flows from the left in the Chräbsbach. From here on it bears the name Mattenbach. If you take this point as the beginning of the Mattenbach, the Mattenbach is almost exactly 4 kilometers long.

The stream then flows through the center of lakes , first it crosses the Büelwiesen district and is then canalised in the center of Seem on a 300 meter long piece. It then flows along the southern outskirts at the foot of the Eschenberghang through the Waldegg district to the Endliker district in the Mattenbach district . The course of the river in this area is strongly straightened and lined with pedestrian and bicycle paths on both sides up to its mouth. Before the straightening, the Mattenbach flowed out of lakes at the level of the St. Urban church , crossed under the Tösstalstrasse before the beginning of the Endlikerstrasse and then flowed north of the current course of the Endlickerstrasse across the urban district that is named after it.

The Mattenbach finally flows into the Eulach near the armories and the msw-winterthur .

etymology

The Mattenbach was formerly also called Attenbach, as several sources show. However, the first documented names are already in today's name.

Others

  • In the second half of the 1990s, according to the Waldeggsee initiative, a small lake was to be built south of the Mattenbach district that would have been fed by the Mattenbach. However, the idea was rejected by the people in February 1999.
