Matthias "Mattli" Conrad or Conradi (* 15. January 1745 in Andeer , † 26. December 1832 ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor , Romance languages and Rätoromanist .

Life

Matthias Conrad was born on January 15, 1745 in Andeer in the Swiss canton of Graubünden as the son of Frederic Conrad and Duscha Cantieni. He was taught by his uncle of the same name, who was also a pastor. From 1764 to 1766 he studied at the Collegium Carolinum in Zurich. In 1766 he was accepted into the Evangelical-Rhaetian Synod .

As early as the next year Conrad became an auditor in Andeer after his uncle passed away. Because of his liberal attitude he was taken hostage in 1799 after the occupation of Graubünden by Austria. Together with 80 other hostages, he was brought to Innsbruck and then to Graz .

Most of the hostages were not released until 1801, including Conrad. In the meantime the parish in Andeer had already found a new pastor, so Conrad went to Serneus to work as a pastor there. In 1803 he moved to the communities of Mathon and Wergenstein . The next year the position in Andeer became vacant again, which he immediately took over and kept until 1828. He spent his retirement in his hometown Andeer, where he died on December 26, 1832.

Since his time as a deportee, at the suggestion of Anton Friedrich Büsching and Wilhelm von Humboldt , he has dealt with Rhaeto-Romanic philology, grammar and lexicography. His Rhaeto-Romanic songs and poems, which became very important for language development in shame, are of particular importance. His German-Romance grammar was one of the first of its kind.
