Matthew Phillip Gelso (born July 18, 1988 in Truckee ) is an American cross-country skier .

Career

Gelso started in West Yellowstone for the first time at the Nor-Am-Cup in November 2005 and came in 34th place over 10 km classic. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2006 in Kranj , he finished 44th in the skiathlon and sprint, 16th over 10 km classic and 15th in the relay. In the following year he won at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2007 in Tarvisio the 30th place in the skiathlon, the 28th place over 10 km freestyle and the 12th place with the relay. In the 2008/09 season he reached Aspen with third place over 10 km classic and first place over 25 km freestyle, his first podium finishes in the US Super Tour . At the U23 World Championships in 2009 , he achieved 32nd place in sprint, 25th place in skiathlon and 19th place over 15 km freestyle. In March 2010 he became the American 10 km classic champion. After finishing second over 10 km freestyle in the US Super Tour in West Yellowstone at the beginning of the 2012/13 season, he made his debut in Canmore in the cross-country skiing world cup , finishing 52nd in the 15 km mass start race and 36th in the skiathlon. This was followed by third place over 15 km freestyle at the US Super Tour in Midway and ninth place overall at the end of the season. In the 2013/14 season he took second place in the US Super Tour in Saint Paul in the 10 km freestyle and first place in the 15 km mass start race. In February 2014 he finished seventh at the American Birkebeiner . In the 2014/15 season he finished in the top ten seven times in the US Super Tour. He achieved third place in the sprint and 15 km mass start race in Bozeman and won the 15 km freestyle in West Yellowstone. He also finished second over 15 km classic at the Nor Am Cup in Rossland . At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun , he finished 54th in the skiathlon. He finished the season in seventh place overall on the US Super Tour. After winning the Kangaroo Hoppet in the summer of 2016 , he won the US Super Tour in West Yellowstone over 15 km classic and sprint and came second in the Nor Am Cup in Vernon over 15 km freestyle. In February 2017 he got his first World Cup points in Pyeongchang with 29th place in sprint and 19th place in skiathlon. At the end of the season he achieved 49th place in the World Cup finals in Québec and reached 125th place in the overall World Cup and seventh place in the overall ranking of the US Supertour.
