Matthew Ritchie has positioned himself on the art scene since the 1990s. He had his first solo exhibition Working Model in 1995 at the Basilico Fine Arts gallery in New York. This was followed in 1996 by a series of solo exhibitions, The Hard Way , which took place in the galleries Météo, Paris, Basilico Fine Arts, New York and c / o - Atle Gerhardsen , Oslo. Early on, his exhibitions combined paintings, wall paintings and sculpture into a complex, expansive metanarration.

In his work, Ritchie combines content and knowledge from Christian and pagan religion , philosophy and science , which he merges into a very unique cosmology ; the exhibition rooms and the possibilities of the Internet serve him as a platform. The idea that everything is information plays an important role here. The artist's first interactive work, The Hard Way , went online in 1996, in which Ritchie playfully introduces the characters of his own mythology . The Hard Way serves as the basis for the work The New Place (2001), which was created for SFMOMA, and which in turn represents the design for Proposition Player (2003, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art). 49 characters are worked out step by step in these works, completed and a fictional environment designed for them.

In an interview with Art: 21 in 2005, Ritchie explains that the work Proposition Player is based on his own thoughts on game theory and quantum mechanics : “It's about the idea that in the moment between placing your bet and the result of the bet there is a kind of infinite freedom because all the possibilities are there. "You may already be a winner!" It's fantastic — you're like a god! Everything opens up. " Proposition Player invites visitors to play in this game that the artist designed. They were given a playing card. Each card symbolizes one of the 49 characters that together tell Ritchie's story of the entire universe .

In the construction of complex narrative systems, Matthew Ritchie's work functions similarly to that of Matthew Barney .

Exhibitions

During his career, Matthew Ritchie has had over 40 solo exhibitions. His work has been shown in the Dallas Museum of Art ; the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston ; the Museum of Contemporary Art (North Miami) ; the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art ; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art ; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum , and the Museum of Modern Art . Ritchie was invited to the Whitney Biennial in 1997, the Sydney Biennale in 2002 , and the São Paulo Biennale in 2004 . Since 1990, Matthew Ritchie's work has enriched more than 100 internationally successful group exhibitions.
