Ben Marcus
Ben Marcus (born October 11, 1967 in Chicago ) is an American author.
Life
Marcus grew up in Austin, Texas ; his mother Jane taught feminist literature at the University of Texas at Austin . While they one Irish - Catholic has the background, Ben followed the Jewish faith of his father and received his Bar Mitzvah .
Jane Marcus later taught at the City University of New York , and Ben studied at New York University . After completing his bachelor's degree in philosophy , he completed the MFA program at Brown University .
Marcus has been writing since the 1990s; He has published in Harper's Magazine , The New Yorker , The New York Times , Salon.com , Time Magazine and Webforum Conjunctions , among others . For several years he was co-editor of the fiction section of the literary magazine Fence from Albany , New York .
Marcus is a lecturer at Columbia University in New York City . He lives here too. In the summer he goes to Brooklin , Maine . His first novel The Age of Wire and String was published by Alfred A. Knopf in New York City in 1995, and Ben Marcus first became known to the German public in 2012 with the translation of his novel The Flame Alphabet , in German the flame alphabet .
He has a child with his wife, the writer Heidi Julavits .
Prizes and awards
- 2000: National Endowment for the Arts Scholarship for Creative Writing
- 2013: Guggenheim scholarship in the creative arts category , fiction department .
- 2013: Marcus received the Mary Ellen von der Heyden Berlin Prize in Fiction from the American Academy in Berlin and was a Fellow of the Academy in autumn 2013.
- 2014: Nomination for the Wingate Literary Prize for Flame Alphabet .
