Matthias Lorenz (born June 11, 1964 in Bensheim ) is a German cellist .

Live and act

Lorenz studied at the Musikhochschule Frankfurt / Main with Gerhard Mantel and took part in courses from Siegfried Palm and Wolfgang Boettcher . Since the end of his studies in 1991 he has been working as a freelance cellist, initially in Frankfurt am Main , and since 1999 he has lived in Dresden .

At the beginning of his studies, Lorenz decided to play mainly contemporary music. This led to numerous world premieres and contacts with living composers. His work in the field of contemporary music can be divided into three areas: solo - piano trio - ensemble:

  • Lorenz continuously plays solo concertos for violoncello. Since 2007, one of the projects has been the Bach.heute project every year , in which he combines a suite by Johann Sebastian Bach with selected contemporary music. This has been followed by the Old Masters series since 2014 , with the focus on masterpieces from the 1960s, each of which is accompanied by a world premiere (2015 Jörg Herchet , 2016 Peter Ablinger ). Typical for him are concerts in which he comments on the composition of the programs and the individual pieces.
  • In 2001 the elole piano trio was founded in Dresden .
  • Matthias Lorenz plays regularly as a guest in various ensembles. Since 2003 he has been a member of the Dresden based "ensemble courage". Since 2011 he has been a member of the “Ostravská banda” in Ostrava .

Other genres are constantly being added to this activity: improvised ballet music for the Frankfurt Ballet under Bill Forsythe , Gormenghast with Irmin Schmidt or various audio pieces with Albrecht Kunze .
