Matthias Gerhard Petzoldt (born June 10, 1948 in Leipzig ) is a German Protestant theologian with a research focus on fundamental theology and hermeneutics .

Career

Petzoldt studied Protestant theology at the church universities in Leipzig and Naumburg . In 1977 he was ordained pastor of the Saxon regional church and worked for eight years as a parish pastor in St. Petri Bautzen (focus on community development in the new Bautzen-Gesundbrunnen area ). In 1984 he was with a thesis on philosophy and religious criticism of Ludwig Feuerbach at the University of Leipzig Dr. theol. PhD . In 1992 he completed his habilitation on Protestant fundamental theology at the Augustana University in Neuendettelsau . In 1987 he was appointed lecturer for systematic theology at the Theological Seminar in Leipzig , and in 1994 professor for fundamental theology and hermeneutics at the University of Leipzig. There he was given the chair for systematic theology / dogmatics in 2006 . He retired in 2013 .

His conception of fundamental theology as a metatheory of theology ( apologetics , theological epistemology , encyclopedia , scientific theory of theology and religious topics as a coherent discourse) pursues the goal of making the subject independent on the Protestant side. On the one hand, the problems and dangers that have emerged in the development of fundamental theology on the Catholic side must be kept in mind. On the other hand, the more fundamental theology is institutionalized in the subject canon of theological science, the better it will be possible to introduce the awareness of the basic scientific problem into the respective reflection processes of all theological disciplines.

In the interdisciplinary field of hermeneutics, he has emerged as an elementary medium of encounter with research on speech act theory and orality .

For him, contributions to Feuerbach research are closely linked to investigations into the problem of secularization .
