Matthias Weiß (born June 2, 1961 ) is a former German football player who was active in the 1980s for Chemie Leipzig , Wismut Aue and 1. FC Magdeburg in the GDR Oberliga , the highest league in GDR football .

Athletic career

Before Matthias Weiß got into higher-class football, he played with the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Velten in the third-class Potsdam district league . At the beginning of the 1980/81 season, the 19-year-old moved to BSG Stahl Hennigsdorf , which played in the second-rate GDR league . With 21 appearances in the 22 league games, White established himself as a regular player, while he was mainly called up in attack and scored four goals.

At the start of the 1981/82 season, the East German league team Chemie Leipzig had to replace his previously successful striker Frank Teubel , who had been drafted for military service. He was replaced by Matthias Weiß, who easily fitted into the team with 20 league games and three goals. In the 1982/83 season he was involved in the Leipzig relay win with 19 point games and three goals again. In the subsequent promotion round, White was used in six of the eight games in which the chemists secured promotion to the league. After three games in his first league season as a striker in 1983/84, White was ordered into the defense, in which he played another eighteen league games by the end of the season. He scored his first league goal in the 21st league game in a 1-1 home game against FC Vorwärts Frankfurt . White was also used in the two playoffs about relegation against tied goal 1. FC Union Berlin , now as a striker again. In the 2-1 second leg win, which ensured relegation, white equalized the opening goal of the Berliners. 1985/86 he played his second season in the league, in which he continued to complete most of the games as a striker. Like the entire team, with two goals he was not dangerous enough to secure relegation again. With only 17 goals scored, Chemie Leipzig had to relegate from the league again after two seasons. For the 1985/86 GDR league season there was a new coach at Chemie Leipzig in Manfred Fuchs . This ordered white into central midfield, where he used him 16 times in the 17 games of the first half of the season.

During the winter break, Matthias Weiß moved back to the top division, where he joined the BSG Wismut Aue. There he already shone in his first league game, when he was mentioned by fuwo as the best player in the game. He came as a midfielder and played as such, as a rule, the remaining twelve league games of the season. On his fourth assignment, he also scored his first point goal for the Erzgebirge. In the 1986/87 and 1987/88 seasons White had a regular place at Wismut Aue with 24 (one goal) and 21 (two goals) appearances and was still mainly used in midfield. For the 1987/88 season Wismut Aue had qualified for the UEFA Cup competition , but was surprisingly eliminated in the second round against Albania's KS Flamurtari Vlora 1-0 and 0-2. White was involved in all four games and scored the goal for Aue in the first round against Iceland's Valur Reykjavík in a 1-1 draw in the second leg.

For the 1988/89 season, White returned to BSG Chemie Leipzig, which had already played in the GDR league for three seasons. There, the previous regular striker Jörg Dämmrich had to be replaced alongside other players . Coach Horst Slaby used the previous midfielder in the attack, where White was regularly in the starting line-up until matchday 24. In the remaining ten league games White was only used once, but was able to point to five league goals in the end. For the 1989/90 season, the new coach Wolfgang Müller planned again with White as a striker and used him regularly until the 8th matchday. This was Weiß 'last competitive game for Chemie Leipzig, and it wasn't until the end of the season that he played for another eight minutes in a friendly against Hannover 96 .

In the 1990/91 season, white was in the squad of the first division club 1. FC Magdeburg . From the 3rd to the 6th matchday he gave a short guest appearance, was always in the starting line-up in the four league games, but only played one encounter over 90 minutes. He did not achieve goals.

Then Matthias Weiß ended his career as a competitive footballer at the age of 30. He joined the Leipzig district class representative TuS Leutzsch as a leisure football player, whom he later helped to advance to the district class.
