Max von Schmaedel actually: Max Ritter von Schmaedel (born May 14, 1856 in Augsburg ; † 1939 ) was a German portrait and genre painter.

Life

From October 1873, Schmaedel studied painting in Munich at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts under Max Adamo , Carl Theodor von Piloty and Alexander von Wagner . After graduating, he worked in Munich. In 1879 he traveled to the USA . On August 31, 1879, he reached the port of Boston , Massachusetts, aboard the SS Samaria . In New Bedford , Bristol County , Massachusetts, he married Louise Cécile Beauvais (1854-1882) on October 15, 1879. In 1880 he returned to Germany with his wife, their son Harold Parker von Schmaedel was born on May 3, 1881. His wife died on June 17, 1882. From this time on, Schmaedel was again based in Munich at various addresses, as the information in the Munich address books up to 1938 shows.

Schmaedel was represented several times, verifiably from 1888 to 1891, with his works in the Munich Glass Palace ; his works were shown in the catalogs of the exhibitions. He also presented his works at the exhibitions of the Royal Academy of the Arts in Berlin. He was a member of the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft and the Munich Secession . Schmaedel's works were mostly portraits or genre scenes.

Max von Schmaedel died in 1939, the exact date of his death remains unknown. His son Harold Parker (1881–1932), called Harald in Germany, also became a painter after attending Munich's Maximiliansgymnasium and the Munich Art Academy.
