In Donndorf he attended the Progymnasium , then the Gymnasium in Roßleben . From 1863 he studied Protestant theology and philosophy in Halle, moved to Berlin in 1865/1866 and finally finished his studies again in Halle. For a short time he worked as a personal secretary, known as an amanuensis , for August Tholuck . In 1868 he passed his first state examination in Halle and then went to Göttingen as a repetitee , where he also received his ordination . He completed his habilitation at the theological faculty in Halle . With his dissertation De notione subiectivae fidei quae exstat in quatuor evangeliis he acquired the title of Lic. Theol here in 1871 . From 1871 he worked as a private lecturer in Halle. He read in particular church history , including Friedrich Schleiermacher , and the theological prolegomena . He also devoted himself to the philosophical works of Hermann Lotze and the theology of Albrecht Ritschl . Through his work he was formative for later important theologians such as Ferdinand Kattenbusch , Wilhelm Herrmann and Johannes Gottschick . Von Kattenbusch was better described as the founder of the Ritschl-related Ritschl School , a theological movement.

In 1875 he became professor and spiritual inspector at the theological convent of the monastery of Our Dear Women in Magdeburg . On May 30, 1876, he married Erdmuthe Laura Marie Schmidt (1855–1934) in Neustadt near Dresden . The marriage had ten children.

Due to health problems, however, he had to give up his academic career as a private lecturer. In 1878, he succeeded Franz Heyne as pastor at the Sankt Gertraud Church in Salbke . He held the office until 1899.
