Max Loewy

Maximilian "Max" Loewy (born January 5, 1875 in Hohendorf near Marienbad ; † January 16, 1948 in Marienbad ) was an Austro-Czech university professor specializing in psychiatry , neurology , balneology and psychoanalysis . Loewy was a survivor of the Holocaust .

Life

Max Loewy graduated after passing the baccalaureate at the secondary school to study medicine at the University of Strasbourg and Prague . After completing his degree , he obtained a doctorate in Dr. med. In summer he worked as a spa doctor and psychiatrist in Marienbad and in winter at the psychiatric clinic in Prague . From 1912 to 1914 he worked as a neurologist in Heluan near Cairo . During the First World War , from 1914 to 1918 he worked as a regimental doctor in the Austro-Hungarian Army and received several awards, including the Karl Troop Cross. From 1919 he was a private lecturer in Prague and in 1924 he became a full professor of neurology and psychiatry at the University of Prague . Loewy published at least 64 scientific papers. He was married without children.

Because of his Jewish origins, he was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto , where he arrived on May 7, 1942. Loewy was considered a so-called celebrity in Theresienstadt and was liberated there on May 8, 1945 by the Red Army . Max Loewy returned to Marienbad where he died in January 1948.
