Max Perty

Josef Anton Maximilian Perty (born September 17, 1804 in Ornbau , Kingdom of Bavaria , † August 8, 1884 in Bern , Switzerland ) was a Bavarian, German entomologist and natural philosopher at the University of Bern.

Life

Perty moved to Munich as a child (1807) . He attended high school in Munich and Tölz . He moved to Landshut to study science and medicine . In 1824 he became a member of the Isaria Corps . In 1826 he was at the University of Landshut to Dr. med. PhD . He didn't want to be a general practitioner, but a natural scientist.

When the university was relocated from Landshut to Munich in 1827, he worked for the conservator and natural philosopher Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert in the zoological and zootomic collection of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , which later became the Munich State Zoological Collection . He worked on the insects that Johann Baptist von Spix (1781–1826) had collected on a trip together with Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius between 1817 and 1820 in Brazil. Perty described 622 species of insects, including 308 species of beetles. At first he worked without, later with low pay, but without a permanent job. Perty was supported by Martius, but still did not get the longed-for position in the academy. But he gave lectures for young zoologists. Habilitated in 1831 , was now able to give lectures as a private lecturer . At the end of 1833 he moved to Bern , where he became full professor at the newly founded University of Bern in 1834 . Perty published, among other things, on rotifers (rotatoria), infusoria , beetles (Coleoptera) and bees.
