The Mayday is an event of electronic dance music , held annually in the Westfalenhallen in Dortmund takes place.

The first Mayday took place on December 14, 1991 in "Die Halle" in Berlin - Weißensee , today's Motorwerk . The aim of the event was to support the radio station DT64 , which was about to end due to the fall of the Wall . The transmission area of ​​DT 64 extended over the five new federal states Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Berlin-Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia and thus did not fit into the newly created structure of the broadcasting landscape there by politics with MDR, ORB and NDR. DT 64 was the first German radio station to broadcast techno, u. a. with Marusha's weekly show Dancehall . This enabled a broad mass of young people to have access to this genre of music who, because of their young age or because of the geographical distance, would not have easily found access to techno clubs and illegal techno parties.

The idea for the party came from Fabian Lenz (DJ Dick) and quickly found support from his brother Maximilian ( WestBam ) and the trendy magazine Frontpage . The name Mayday has nothing to do with “a day in May”, but is derived from the international emergency call signal on radio , the anglicized French “M'aidez” (German: “Help me!”). The event was very successful with around 5000 visitors.

Despite the success of the event, the radio station was switched off on December 31, 1991 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and on January 1, 1992 in the Berlin-Brandenburg area. Well-known DT-64 radio presenters - including Marusha - changed a. for emerging ORB -Jugendsender Rock Radio B .

Due to the high number of visitors to the first event, another Mayday was celebrated on April 30, 1992, this time in the ice rink in Cologne . But on July 1, 1992, DT 64 was also switched off by VHF in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia and only transmitted on the marginal medium wave under the name " Sputnik ".

The Mayday continued to take place - twice a year from 1992 to 1996, once on April 30th and again between the end of November and mid-December. In 1993, the May Day was celebrated for the first time in the Westfalenhallen in Dortmund. The Winter Mayday initially stayed in Berlin and was also held once in Frankfurt am Main . From 1997 onwards the Winter Mayday, for which one had to look for a new hall every year, was given up, and the focus was entirely on the May Mayday in the Westfalenhallen.

The managing director of Mayday GmbH was WestBams friend and sponsor William Röttger .

DJ WestBam, who took part in all 60 Mayday events worldwide except for the Dutch offshoot Mayday on September 24, 2011, announced his departure in February 2014 due to irreconcilable differences with the organizer i-Motion. This means that the hymns of the events will no longer be produced by the Members of Mayday as before . Its successor is the project The Mayday Masters , which was renamed Friends of Mayday the following year.

In 1994 the Winter Mayday took place under the motto “The Raving Society ” on two consecutive evenings with the same line-up of DJs as a so-called “Twin Mayday” due to the great demand . For the actually planned event on November 26th, tickets were no longer available before the advertising was published. A second event with the same line-up was therefore planned the day before. What seemed to the creators to be a great idea to help as many fans as possible to visit Mayday and to get the maximum income from the event, met with great criticism in the scene : There was talk of “sell-off” and “rip-off”, and the reputation of the Mayday - until then a flagship rave  - suffered lastingly. Another point of criticism of the “Raving Society”: the CD compilation for the event offered a comparatively poor price-performance ratio with only 17 tracks on two CDs - buyers were offered 23 songs on the previous “Rave Olympia”. The “Twin Mayday” therefore remained a unique experiment.

Since 2000 attempts have been made to export the Mayday to other countries. There are now regular Mayday raves in Poland , Russia and Hungary . Further offshoots are being planned.

In 2011 Mayday celebrated its twentieth birthday under the motto "Twenty Young". The special thing was that there was a fifth floor, the “Twenty Young Dome”, on which only DJs from the early years performed. Furthermore, no modern event technology was used there, but also those from the early years. In addition, a new record was set with 27,000 visitors.

On May 3, 2016, Mayday in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle served as a lively backdrop for the shooting of the German comedy Magical Mystery or: The Return of Karl Schmidt by director Arne Feldhusen from 2017.
