Shahryar Mazgani (* 1975 in Tehran ) is an Iranian - Portuguese rock musician . It belongs to the Americana style of music.

Life

When Khomeni took over the government in 1979, Shahryar Mazgani's parents left Iran because they feared repression as members of the persecuted Baha'i religion. Mazgani came to Portugal with his parents in 1980 at the age of five. They moved to Setúbal , where his parents had friends, and where Mazgani has lived since then. At home he spoke Persian , but he gives Portuguese as his mother tongue, due to his growing up in Portugal.

He claims to have always been a friend of Americana music, and mentions Leonard Cohen , Tom Waits , Bob Dylan and Nick Cave as important influences. At the age of 20 he learned to play the guitar by himself , and at the age of 30 he founded his music project, which he has called Mazgani ever since. Previously, he graduated in law , and worked as a journalist and screenwriter.

From 2005 he appeared regularly in public. In 2007 his first album, Song of the New Heart, was released . The EP Tell the People , released in 2009, was recorded in a remote studio in Vila Velha de Ródão and produced by dead combo musician Pedro Gonçalves. It drew the attention of critics in Portugal through its, the blues roots facing further development compared to the more conventional debut album. The French cultural magazine Les Inrockuptibles then counted Mazgani among the most promising new names on the European music scene, and he took third place in the 2009 International Songwriting Competition , whose jury included Tom Waits.

In 2010 he wrote the music for the play Sr. Puntila eo seu criado Matti (after Brecht's Mr. Puntila and his servant Matti ), staged at the Teatro Aberto , which won a Globo de Ouro . The following album, Song of Distance , which was recorded and produced at the same time as the songs on the EP and which also appeared in Broken Silence sales in Germany, briefly hit the Portuguese sales charts.

In April 2012, the documentary The Road to Mazgani by the Portuguese director Rui Pedro Tendinha premiered at the Doclisboa Film Festival . The 44-minute documentary accompanies Mazgani's band from their rehearsals to the tour that took them through various countries in Europe.

Mazgani recorded his 2013 album Common Ground in Bristol , England , produced by John Parish , and with Mick Harvey, the former drummer of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds , as a guest musician. The track Distant Garden was the first single from it.
