Dead Combo is a band from Portugal .

history

After they both played in various previous bands (Tó Trips for example with Lulu Blind), they started making music together in 2001 after getting to know each other better after a Howe Yellow concert in Lisbon. In 2002 they started as Dead Combo and with the eponymous concept of playing atmospheric, primarily instrumental music with morbid charm. In 2003 they published music for the first time under their name, a contribution to the tribute project for Carlos Paredes (1925-2004), a master of the Portuguese guitar . Since then, the band has mostly named 2003 as the year they were founded.

Her album Vol. 1 , published in 2004, received numerous good reviews, including the title “Album of the Year” in the Público newspaper . The author and BBC Radio DJ Charlie Gillet chose Rombero for his compilation The Sound of the World 2005 . The second album Vol.2 - Quando a Alma Não é Pequena was named "Album of the Year" and "Album of the Month" for Charlie Gillet in many Portuguese newspapers.

As a result, the band performed live more and more often, including at some of the most important festivals in Portugal, such as the Festa do Avante! 2011, in Paredes de Coura , and at the FMM in Sines , where they performed with Marc Ribot in 2012 .

She also played in some of the most important concert halls in the country, for example as part of a pop music series in the Centro Cultural de Belém , together with The Legendary Tigerman in the Coliseu dos Recreios , or in the Casa da Música in Porto. Her concert, recorded at the Teatro São Luiz in 2009, was released on CD and DVD in 2010, after her concert at the Hot Clube de Portugal was released on CD in 2009.

The band also played frequently internationally, for example in Prague and Budapest in 2011 . At the Cannes Film Festival 2012 they played for the premiere of the film Cosmopolis , the film produced by Paulo Branco by director David Cronenberg . After her appearance in 2012 on the Lisbon episode of Anthony Bourdain's television program No Reservations , various Dead Combo albums were among the top 10 best-selling tracks in the iTunes Store in the USA . In the official sales charts in Portugal, three of their albums reached middle places. The Lisboa Mulata (dt. About: The Mulatta Lisbon) , published in 2011, made it to 16th place and stayed in the charts in Portugal for several weeks. The album, which featured guest musicians Marc Ribot , Alexandre Frazão , Sérgio Godinho and the fado singer Camané , also received international attention.

With their next studio album, A Bunch of Meninos , they went straight to number one in the Portuguese album charts in 2014 .

style

Dead Combo combine elements of rock 'n' roll with jazz and blues , but also with fado and coladeira . With their mostly instrumental , very acoustic pieces of music they create calm sounds. Recalls its atmospheric music, even by occasional sound bites and quotations of Western , spaghetti westerns and B-movies . The band made the music for various films accordingly.

Their appearances, but also the cover designs, etc. Ä. Are in a similar context. Tó Trips appears with an old top hat, and Pedro Gonçalves often stands on stage in the fog with his double bass. According to their name, the Dead Combo cultivates a closeness to cemeteries and everything morbid, for example when they play on stage next to a decorated coffin at concerts.
