Meelis Kanep (born May 27, 1983 in Võru ) is an Estonian chess player .

At the Estonian individual championships he finished in Pühajärve 2001 a shared third place, 2002 in Kilingi-Nõmme the sole third place, 2003 in Tallinn the second place. In 2004, 2005 and 2007, each in Tallinn, he was able to win the Estonian championship. In 2009 in Rakvere he finished third again. In rapid chess he finished second at the Estonian championship in 2001, he won the Estonian rapid chess championship in 2003 as well as the Estonian youth championship in the same year. He won the Paul Keres Memorial in Tallinn in September 2005.

Playing for the Estonian national team, he took part in five Chess Olympiads ( 2002 , 2004 , 2006 , 2008 and 2010 ) and two European team championships (2003 and 2005). He plays club chess not only in Estonia (for Viljandi Maleseltsi ) but also in Finland (on the first board of EtVaS from Vantaa ). With EtVaS he was Finnish team champion in the 2008/09 season.

In November 2002 he received the title of International Master . He has been a grandmaster since June 2006 . He achieved the standards for this at the 2002 Chess Olympiad in Bled , at the 73rd Estonian Individual Championship in Tallinn in 2005 and in the same year at the Paul Keres Memorial, which was also held in Tallinn . In April 2008, he last led the Estonian Elo ranking with his then Elo number of 2535.
