Katherine Megan McArthur (born August 30, 1971 in Honolulu , Hawaii , USA ) is an American astronaut .

Start of career

McArthur grew up in California and graduated from Christian High School (St. Francis High School) in Mountain View in 1989 . She then studied aerospace engineering at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated in 1993 with a bachelor's degree . At the San Diego site , she achieved a doctorate in oceanography in 2002 .

In the meantime she worked on several research projects in the field of oceanography.

NASA

In 2000 she was elected to NASA's 18th astronaut group and trained as a mission specialist for two years . Her specialty was the technical equipment of the space shuttle .

She was the liaison spokesperson ( Capcom ) for STS-116 , for the spacecraft activities of the STS-117 mission , as well as for the STS-131 , STS-134 and STS-135 missions .

STS-125

McArthur participated as a mission specialist in the space shuttle mission STS-125 , which started on May 11, 2009 for the final maintenance of the Hubble space telescope . The landing took place on May 24, 2009 at Edwards Air Force Base .

NEEMO 21

From July 21 to August 5, 2016, she worked as an aquanaut during the NEEMO-21 mission on board the Aquarius underwater laboratory.

SpaceX Crew-2

At the end of July 2020, she was assigned to the SpaceX Crew-2 mission , which began on April 23, 2021.
