Melchior "Melch" Kern (born March 9, 1872 in Mainz , † January 18, 1947 in Munich ) was a German painter and painting teacher .

Kern studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main , at the Werkkunstschule Darmstadt and then matriculated on October 19, 1891 at the Munich Art Academy , where Gabriel von Hackl and Ludwig von Löfftz were his teachers.

He was one of the painters who belonged to the artist colony founded by Charles Johann Palmié in Kallmünz at the beginning of the 20th century . In Fürstenfeldbruck near Munich he founded and directed an open-air school , which the painter Albert Reich took over in 1911 . His students included Leo Fellinger , Sophie Hauser , Josef Müller and the landscape and architectural painter Friedrich Georg Trost (d. J.) . He was a member of the Munich artist group "Der Bund".

Kern's motifs generally depict scenes from rural and village life, landscapes, portraits, animals and still lifes . Pictures of him were shown in the Munich Glass Palace , at the Düsseldorf – Munich Art Exhibition in 1932 in the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition .
