Melissa Anne Villaseñor (born October 9, 1987 in Whittier , California ) is an American actress , stand-up comedian and impersonator . She has been part of the cast of Saturday Night Live since season 42 in 2016 . Her other work includes speaking roles in several episodes of OK KO! Let's Be Heroes and Adventure Time . She also took part in the sixth season of America's Got Talent .

Career

Villaseñor was a semi-finalist in the sixth season of America's Got Talent. She was previously selected for the "New Faces Lineup" at the Just for Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival 2010. She has performed speaking roles for the animated series Adventure Time , Family Guy and TripTank . Villaseñor most recently appeared in the second season of HBO's Crashing .

Saturday Night Live

Villaseñor was presented on October 1, 2016 as a “Featured Player”, an episode of the SNL alongside Mikey Day and Alex Moffat. Her debut was a parody of Sarah Silverman on the Family Feud : Celebrity Edition sketch. Villaseñor is the first Latina cast member and the first Latina to be appointed to the repertoire. In the 44th season she was taken over into the regular cast.

She previously auditioned for the show in 2009 when she was just 21 years old. She made an impression but was not hired that year. Instead, Nasim Pedrad and Jenny Slate were hired.

Personal life

Villaseñor grew up in Whittier , California , and attended Ramona Convent Secondary School in Alhambra , California. She is of Mexican descent. Villaseñor began stand-up at the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp in Hollywood , California when he was fifteen .

Twitter controversy

After joining the SNL in 2016, Villaseñor deleted tweets she had previously posted that some had viewed as racist . Most of the tweets released by the media were published in 2010 and 2011. Villaseñor tweeted: “A bossy black lady on my temporary job looks just like Steve Erkel [sic]. Ugly. ”And“ I hate those Mexicans on wheels, they threw something on my car. The world doesn't need them. ”The SNL and Villaseñor declined to comment on the alleged racism .
