The tooth rust sawhorn bee ( Melitta tricincta ) is a bee from the genus of sawhorn bees ( Melitta ) from the family of Melittidae .

description

Features common to both sexes

The tooth-rust sawhorn bees' tongue is shorter than the jaw probe. The cheek area is shorter than the sensor segment A2. The surface of the galea (outer box of the maxilla ), the scutum and the scutellum are matt and sculptured. The triangular propodeum is clearly sculptured, its edge is keel-shaped. The tergites are black, the second to fourth tergites on the metasoma are covered with yellowish-white stripes of hair directed forward, which are usually as long or occasionally shorter than the edge zone.

female

The females reach a length of about 11 mm. They have a convex clypeus , which is densely covered with deep point pits. The surface between the point pits is smooth (at least towards the front), with a non-dotted line in the middle. The scutum of the females is mixed with reddish and black hair, on the first tarsal link of the hind legs they have pale hair. The fimbria sitting in front of the telson is mostly black and has yellowish hairs on the sides. The pygidium plate usually has a narrow raised area in the middle.

male

The males are about 10 mm long. Your clypeus is convex and densely dotted except for a part in front. The antennas are colored brown, the antenna segments A3 and A4 are of the same length. The antenna segments A4 to A12 are enlarged towards the front and on the underside. The hair on the underside of the femur of the hind legs is shorter than it is wide. The first tarsal link of the hind legs is twice as wide as the second tarsal link of the hind legs, the edges are parallel. The disc of the third tergite on the metasoma is covered with black hair. The sternites of the fourth and fifth segments are notched on the edge facing forward; the sternite on the sixth segment is hairy in the center towards the tip; the sternite on the seventh segment is almost hairless on both sides towards the tip; the sternite on the eighth segment is almost hairless. The gonostyle is straight and cut off at the tip. The digitus is rounded at the top.

distribution

The tooth rust sawhorn bee is widespread in Europe. Their distribution area extends from southern England in the west to Ufa and Udmurtia in Russia in the east. The northern border of the distribution area is Löderup and Kalmar in Sweden , the southern border is Sicily / Italy .

ecology

The species flies from late July to late September. It mainly visits summer root plants (Orobanchaceae), for example tooth rusts ( Odontites ), eye rusts ( Euphrasia ) and quail wheat ( Melampyrum ), but has also been observed on daisy family (Asteraceae), legumes (Fabaceae), mint plants (Lamiaceae) and willow plants .

Danger

The species is listed on the Red List of Endangered Animals in Germany as "Endangered" (Category 3).
