Menzonio is a fraction of the political municipality Lavizzara in the Lavizzara district , in the Vallemaggia district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

geography

The village lies at an altitude of 725 m above sea level. M. on a terrace lined with chestnut trees and 33 km north of Locarno . Due to its location, one overlooks a large part of the Lavizzar valley. The village was one of several processing centers for also for the production of vessels soapstone called soapstone from the quarries of Val Lavizzara and Val Bavona, and the common word Lavezstein has a connection with the Val Lavizzara.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1364 under the then name Menzone ; then Manzonio 1400, Menzoia 1589, Mentono 1591, Menzoii 1596. In the Middle Ages a vicinia with Brontallo formed ; under Swiss rule it appointed one of the judges to assist the bailiff in the administration of justice and sent three representatives to the council of the Lavizzar valley.

The hamlet of Piantedo (roughly: "planted") and the group of houses Monda (roughly: "clearing") are around 100 meters above the village and were inhabited all year round and only accessible on foot. Piantedo has been operated and renovated by the Pianta Monda Menzonio cooperative since 1993 as an eco-village and cooperative .

Community merger

The previously independent political municipality Menzonio was merged on April 4, 2004 with the former municipalities Broglio , Brontallo , Fusio , Peccia and Prato-Sornico to form Lavizzara municipality.
